Ward Road in 1896 |
Was this the station clock? |
The photo on the left comes from the Dundee Central Library Collection and the was Gilroy's Warehouses which was on the site of the Ward Road Station.
In the mid-1960s, the site of the station was occupied (as I recall) by a Post Office Telephones building and this clock, partly hidden by a large heating oil tank, was said to be the station clock.
Coach Builders in Meadowside |
The train in Bustor Keton's Our Hospitality |
The photo on the left is also from the Dundee Central Library Collection. It shows the coach builders, Thomas Cuthbert & Son, who were originally based in Perth. George Cuthbert came to Dundee as a young man and is described as "building carriages for railway companies". I presume that would include the Dundee / Newtyle company whose station was at the other end of the street, to the west of their building. The first coaches were redundant stage coaches fitted on railway bogies with flanged wheels. The train in the Buston Keton film Our Hospitality is a copy of the original ones imported from England in 1829 and, therefore, probably gives a fair representation of the original trains on the Dundee - Newtyle line.
