The Quarterly Journal of Agriculture, Vol.IV No XIX, 1833 states that "a difficulty occurred at the forming of the inclined plane at Balbeuchly. Here the great hollow in the fields had to be filled up to the height of about 40 feet above the ground; and this great embankment was formed of travelled rubbish. To obtain materials for filling up as near to the spot as possible, a portion of the ground at the top of this inclined place was removed, which had the effect of keeping down the height of the level over the bog of Auchterhouse, and affording space for the engine-house."
