The original destination - Newtyle

The station at Newtyle was the terminus of the Dundee & Newtyle Railway. In 1833 the line had 31,000 passengers, a number which had risen to 61,000 by 1839.

The Hatton incline and the deviation line are both seen running from two thirds along the bottom of the above map: the incline ran into the centre of Newtyle and the deviation looped round the town.

The original station

The original station, shown in this engraving by G Cumming, was superseded as a passenger station by a new one on the deviated line, but remained open for goods until the 1960s.
