An extension of the Dundee & Newtyle Railway onwards to Glamis, was authorised in 1835 and opened to goods in 1837 and to passengers in 1838. It was built by an independent company, the Newtyle & Glammiss Railway (the Company used the old spelling of the village). Around the same period the separate Newtyle & Coupar Angus Railway opened a line between Newtyle and Coupar Angus. Eventually both of these railways were taken over by the Scottish Midland Junction Railway and used in part for the new route between Perth and Forfar (opened 1848).
The photo was taken about 0.75 miles north of Newtyle and the original route to Glamis is discernible among the trees.
